How To Get My Kid To Eat More Than Pizza And Chicken Nuggets

How and why do we allow our kids to become picky a$$ eaters? I am still trying to figure this out eight years later. In the beginning I was great with purées with different foods and vegetables. He ate pretty much everything I put on his plate. And somewhere along the way my a$$ got lazy enough to where now he only eats so many things and we are trying to figure out how to change it for the better.

I can say with the pandemic, at least for me, it hasn’t helped the cause. We are already in weird times where we all move out of our normal routine, we don’t feel like ourselves and to think that we still have to make sure to stay on top of things that are super important in our kids lives. Some day in the future when Covid isn’t controlling things, we want to be able to go to fine dining restaurants, visit someones house and not be worried about what food they may and may not have for kids options.

I think the ahh haa moment for me was finding out he’s not only vitamin d deficient but also is very low in iron. That was a kick in my butt and a slap to my face because I realized I needed to do better for him. I got so comfortable with just giving him the quick, easy to put together meals that I knew he would eat and I didn’t have to think twice about. Welp, guess that’s what I needed to hear to push myself to get it together. Now that we are home all the time, and I am home all the damn time, there really is no excuse to not to introduce new foods to his pallet.

But my a$$ needs help! I need to hear from some other mommas on how they are finding successful ways to introduce new and exciting foods, fruits and vegetables. I try not to beat myself up when I see and read about other mommas that have successfully been able to give their little ones a 3 course meal that includes liver, cauliflower with rosemary that’s perfectly placed with colorful garnishments in their posts. Naw, that’s not me, and I can’t pretend it is. I really try not to envy it, judge it, question it (but of course sometimes that happens).

How the hell do I divert from pizza, chicken nuggets, quesadillas, plain spaghetti and plain noodles!? I will say, I am proud that he loves my smoothies that come packed with spinach, frozen fruits, bananas, a splash of V8 Juice, carrots and whatever else I might be able to find in the kitchen. I am starting to add avocado to it as well…but I know I can do more.

I really don’t want to become so complacent that it creates bad habits and hinders our sons growth and ability to explore exciting flavors. We want him to be versatile and be able to adjust and adapt to the surroundings he’s in and have fun doing it. Being home all the time I am trying to push more and more to get off my a$$ and be creative, positive and encouraging, not just with school, but now with foods. And I need help from other mommas on how to get a boy to get excited about new foods too! Help a sista out 🙂

  1. Lol are our kids the same persons?! Lol they eat the same but thankfully they love sushi and charbroiled chicken…I think where I dropped the ball is asking them what they want to eat instead of telling them what’s for dinner! Giving them no choice is what I wish would happen more but um Some days I’m just not in the mood for a tantrum cuz I won’t give them quesadillas or chicken nuggets 😩🤣
I think cooking a meal with the kids helped to open their curiosity to wanting to try new things. How about you look for a recipe you two can make together and that’ll make him want to try something new. Just an idea. Hope that helps. I’m gonna try that same thing! I’ll let you know how that goes! Lol
