How To Be A Boy Mom (Kinda)

a mother and son playing hide and seek

It’s so funny to think of the phases I have gone through and continue to go through as a mom. Just as they say kids go through phases, I am beginning to see more and more the phases I am going through with my son and sometimes it just cracks me up.

When he use to be little and just a ray of sunshine everything I did he loved and admired. I soaked it up, enjoyed every moment…until it started to change and I wasn’t so cool anymore 😂 Now what I do is either cheesy or “not funny mom”. I’ve seen those memes where moms say I wasn’t prepared for going from Ma-Ma to Mommy to Mom to Bruh…Ummm, yeh no, there’s no way he will ever be allowed to call me bruh so I can’t relate to that. But, what I will say is that I remember when he told me to drop the m – y on mommy one day when I was speaking to him. That moment, I will never forget. That was the oh sh*t he’s not a baby anymore moment. My cute little mini me was growing up!

I didn’t have any heads up on how it would be to raise a boy, I was around a lot of women growing up and didn’t really experience the gross and annoying stuff boys tend to say and do, among other crazy, silly, nasty stuff. Now, having my own big boy that’s also an only child, it’s a constant need to want to stay connected to him even though I won’t always understand everything he, as a boy will go through growing up into being a man.

With that being said…there are ways I do find myself trying to stay connected with him. It may not be the way I envisioned, but I will always try. Sometimes I am learning how to build a basement in Minecraft with him, play tag and hide and seek in Roblox, or we have moments where we are watching a kids show that has funny and disgusting references he enjoys (maybe not so much for me). He loves playing tag in the house with me too, it’s pretty hilarious. Let’s not forget going to the park and playing outside while huffing and puffing trying to keep up! But at the end of the day, in between whatever we are doing, I am always talking to him, I am always asking him questions and practicing listening to him as well.

Being a kid in todays climate I can only imagine has a lot of stresses and pressures, and it’s important for me to stay tapped in and engaged with how he’s feeling and how he’s doing. I just think all parents should be checking in, not just trying to keep the kids busy and constantly on the move, but given attention that only comes with stopping everything around us. That’s just my personal views, of course with everyone’s journey and situations there will be differences and sometimes challenges we can’t control. At the end of the day my goal, as a boy mom, is to continue to be engaged with how he is doing and feeling along with everything else. Part of that for me, means trying to be “cool” hahahaha!!!!
